Biophagy has been awarded a new Leverage Grant from New Mexico Small Business Assistance to work with Sandia National Laboratories (Dr. Jeri Timlin and Dr. Bryan Carson). Biophagy will lead a consortium of three NM bioscience companies, including Avisa Pharma (Santa Fe, NM) and Omphalos Biosciences (Albuquerque, NM). The team will work towards identifying a lead autophagy stimulant for its program in tuberculosis and optimizing a new antibiotic in a synergistic approach to treating this infectious disease

The newest company in STC’s commercialization pipeline, Biophagy LLC, is gearing up for testing a new technology developed by Dr. Vojo Deretic, Chair of UNM’s Dept. of Molecular Genetics & Microbiology.

STC.UNM and Biophagy LLC, Albuquerque’s newest bioscience start-up, have signed an option to license agreement for technologies created at the University of New Mexico. The company will develop diagnostics and therapeutics for diseases related to autophagy.

Dr. Mary J. Ortner, PhD, MBA has been appointed president and CEO of Biophagy, LLC. Dr. Ortner has started or been involved in six entrepreneurial bioscience companies and worked at Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals and Shire Biologics during her 25 year career in the pharmaceutical industry.

Dr. Steven Bradfute, PhD, has taken a position as scientific consultant with Biophagy, LLC. Dr. Bradfute works with Dr. Vojo Deretic at the University of New Mexico and will assist Biophagy with autophagy assay design and interpretation.

Dr. Mary Ortner, PhD MBA, has been elected to the Board of Directors of the NM Biotechnology and Biomedical Association, (NMBio). With a twenty-year history serving bioscience in New Mexico, NM Bio is the BIO-affiliated NM trade association for bioscience. It provides monthly seminars for information exchange, develops initiatives for small business success, supports bioscience education/collaboration, and publicizes New Mexico’s bioscience industry. It serves as the voice of the state’s biotechnology/biomedical industry (http://nmbio.org/).
